Gazetteer

The Gazetteer will be continually added to as wells are located. I have sorted wells into rough geographical locations: Cork City; West Cork, East Cork and North Cork. There doesn’t seem to be a South Cork! I have listed wells alphabetically, giving the English name first, followed by the Irish name if it has one. Please note spellings can vary enormously as Gaeilge!  I have included basic information about each well including giving the Sites and Monuments Record number (SMR) if it has one. Use the SMR to find basic information about individual wells, including a map, on the Archaeological Survey of Ireland website.

Please note that whilst many wells are accessible some are on private land and permission should be sought where possible. Some wells are in extremely remote areas and care should always be taken when exploring.

My own MAP is now available showing holy wells visited. Follow the link and click on the dots to find information about individual wells.
